Factors of Encountering Jesus

(Apr 2012: Homiletics: "Expository Sermon")

TITLE:      FACTORS OF ENCOUNTERING JESUS

TEXT:       MARK 7:24-30

INTRODUCTION

Illustration: There was a Taiwanese woman pastor who was born invalid. She could not walk and had to crawl on the floor. Everyone despised her and saw her as a debt to the family. Yet her mother treasured and loved her so much that she would grasp every opportunity to seek for her daughter’s healing. Her mother would even be willing to climb up mountains, pass by rocky roads and travel miles of journey carrying her on her back in order to look for medical assistance or divine healing.

The Phoenician woman we are going to look at this morning in the passage is like the Taiwanese mother, who was helpless yet never gave up her hope to seek healing for her daughter who was demon possessed. Because of her love for the daughter, she was persistent and humble enough to come before Jesus, and thus she encountered God in a tremendous way, receiving healing from God both for herself and for her daughter.

Proposition:  Every one of us needs to encounter God.

Interrogative sentence:   How can we encounter God like this Phoenician woman?

Transitional sentence:   Mark 7:24-30 indicates two aspects helping us to encounter God, factors which have to do with man and factors which have to do with God.

I.            MAN’S FACTORS

Before we look further on factors contributed by man, let’s have some background ideas about this Phoenician woman. Matthew 15 refers her as a Canaanite woman. She was identified differently because Luke addresses to Greeks who regard her as a Phoenician and the Jews recognize her as a Canaanite. Canaanites were well-known for worshipping multiple gods. In the Old Testament we see that they built altars everywhere, either under the trees or on top of the mountains, and they bowed down to Baal, to stones, to trees etc. With influences from the Greek culture and religions, their gods were even varied in names and great in numbers.

Under such cultural setting, the Phoenician woman could have run about all over places of Phoenicia and its nearby areas but she just could not find any god who was able to heal her daughter. In verse 25 the Bible says she heard about Jesus. And as soon as she heard about him, she came and fell at his feet.

Where is Phoenicia? It is situated east along the coast of Mediterranean Sea, at the north of Galilee. After Jesus received the empowerment from the Holy Spirit, He was actively demonstrating power of the Kingdom through healing and deliverance. His fame was widely spread, farther even across to those pagan regions nearby Galilee. When Jesus entered the vicinity of Phoenicia, he was discovered immediately by the woman.

It was never easy for a Phoenician woman to come before Jesus. Firstly, though Jesus had entered into her homeland, he was a complete stranger to her. Secondly, she was a pagan woman while Jesus was a Jewish Rabbi. The Jewish Rabbis were reluctant to associate with women in public places, even with their own wives. Thirdly, there was a religious gap between her and Jesus, with her believing in multiple gods and Jesus believing in One and Only True God of Israel. Fourthly, there was ethnical discrimination causing the Jews to despise the pagans and name them dogs while the pagan mocked Jews as dirty pigs. There was such invisible and unspeakable tension existed between her and Jesus.

Transitional sentence: Why then, did the woman come before Jesus?

1.   BECASUSE SHE HAS A NEED

25 In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an impure spirit came and fell at his feet. 26 The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.

She came to Jesus precluding any fears of being rejected, because there was an immediate and desperate need in her. She had sought long enough and found none who could meet her need. Whenever people have needs, they could either choose to possess an attitude of unbelief, to give up and to do evil, or they could choose to humble themselves in order to solve their problems. The Phoenician woman chose to be the latter. Therefore she overcame her psychological hindrances and came to Jesus.

She did not address Jesus as a Rabbi. Instead she called him “Lord”. By bowing to him and calling him Lord, she actually lowered herself and acknowledged that she could be a servant of Jesus. Others might see Jesus as a Rabbi, yet she saw him as the Lord, the God. He was equaled or even greater than those gods that she had worshipped before. She placed her hope in Him and perceived Him as the only One who would be able to deliver her daughter from the torturous tricks of the demons.

What will be our reaction when we have unmet needs or unresolved problems in our lives? Sometimes in our lost we turn to all gods trying to get our own solutions. In our innocent moments we might behave as she did. But if you were to know that Jesus is the Lord, would you be willing to come as the Phoenician woman, to let go of all the prejudices, fears and uncertainties, to overcome sense of enmity because of cultural, ethnical and religious differences, and uphold your needs or problems before the Lord?

Transitional sentence: The second reason which caused her to come to Jesus was

2.   BECAUSE SHE BELIEVED JESUS WAS WILLING TO MEET HER NEEDS

27 “First let the children eat all they want,” he told her, “for it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.” 28 “Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”

How did Jesus reply her? It was surprised to hear what Jesus had told her. Many who came before Jesus were never turned down by Him. Even those Samaritans, whom Jews considered detestable, were granted their requests whenever they willingly asked of Him. It seems to us that Jesus intended to humiliate this woman. He plainly told her that He had come for the salvation of the house of Israel. The pagans were nothing but dogs in His eyes. If there were many among the children of Israel who were still hungry and unfed, how could He possibly minister to the needs of those unrelated Gentiles?

Lives of people were definitely more precious than dogs and Jesus indicated that He should prioritize His time and energy in feeding the Israelites instead of this pagan woman. The words of Jesus seemed harsh and bitter to be swallowed. Just imagine how you would react under this humiliation, even when you were in the midst of desperate need? Would you remain calm and humble? Or would you felt irritated and annoyed?

The woman could have raised an issue and urged her countrymen to drive Jesus out from their homeland. But she became more humble. She waited upon mercy of her Master. It was because of her determination to get her daughter healed that she was unwilling to let go of Jesus. The words of Jesus did not deter her, but instead intensified her persuasion towards Jesus. Even the dogs under the tables would eat the children’s crumbs. That was her faith. That was her declaration of trust towards the love and mercy of God. She was pretty sure that she could receive His grace unconditionally.

It was indeed true that dogs will get their share of food most of the times after the children are well-fed. It would be abnormal for a master to refuse to feed his dogs if he had surplus. The faith of the woman convinced Jesus, and He granted her heart desire. Her daughter was healed and delivered from the torture of the demons.

We learn an important lesson from this woman, how she held on to the source of her hope and refused to give up in the midst of difficulties and humiliation. Having faith is the very first step for us to see miracle and breakthrough. The woman never let go of Jesus, for she believed with all her heart that He was willing to bless her daughter.

Do you have such confidence that Jesus loves us and He will certainly meet our needs if we humbled ourselves and never give up on Him? Jesus taught that those who are persistent in their prayer shall see God’s mercy and grace. He will provide what they need and what they ask for.

Grasp Jesus and ask of Him. He is more willing to help us in our predicaments and difficulties. He is more willing to hear us out and ease our anxiety. He is there always ready to pour out His blessings to those who are willing to see Him with the eyes of faith.

Our faith will not be in vain. If we are willing, God is even much more willing. The Scripture shows us the heartbeat of Jesus towards this troubled mother. That is His heartbeat for us too.

Transitional sentence: After seeing the factors that have to do with man, we shall examine factors that have to do with God in this divine encounter:

II.          GOD’S FACTORS

Have you ever wonder why Jesus seemed so unfriendly towards the woman? Was that because He did not intend to meet the needs of the woman at the first place? We knew that Jesus came to Tyre to take rest. But why he chose the village of this woman? Couldn’t He foresee this helpless woman before he entered the village? Our Lord is more than a Rabbi, He is the Son of God. He possesses prophetic senses and the heart of the Father. There were reasons more than taking a rest that had caused Him to travel so far into the vicinity of Tyre. He had in mind two main intentions when He was conversing with this woman.

Transitional sentence: Firstly, from the passage we know that ultimately,

1.   JESUS INTENDED TO MEET HER NEED

29 Then he told her, “For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter.” 30 She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.

Our Lord Jesus is not just the Lord of Israelites, but He is also the Lord of all nations. He is the Lord over Phoenician. His heart is not concerned only about the salvation of Israel, but all those who are lost and in need of Him. He will sparingly and freely give His salvation to all men who come before Him, regardless of their nationality, geographical locality, age, sex, religion etc.

The woman had been worshipping some gods which were constraint and confined by geographical distances, and they were limited to nationality and ethnicity. But Jesus is beyond human boundary. He does not restrict himself to a certain place or people group, and His heart goes all out for the needy. He travels and seeks, and there He meets the lost, the hungry, the sick, the underprivileged, the outcast etc.

Some of us might be seeking after many gods or life philosophies to secure our future. But we need to be aware that while we are running after all these futile things, Jesus is the One who pursues us. God is not far away but near. He does not distance from us sitting high in heaven ministering to us from above. He descended on earth, and lived as a man among His people. He has suffered what we have suffered and He understands what is meant to be human and to have weaknesses. He had seen the need of the Phoenician woman even before she approached Him.

Many of us might not meet or experience Jesus before. But He has seen you and He has come in our midst, ministering to all of us through His servants and His living Word. There is no barrier between us and God, as long as we are willing to admit our sin and put our trust in Him. Nothing is able to separate us from the love of God, not even the barrier of languages, localities, ethnicity, social statuses etc. For Jesus is willing to forgive the sins of all men, and to receive us into His Kingdom.

Transitional sentence: What more then, has Jesus intended when he conversed with the woman?

2.   JESUS DESIRED TO RELATE WITH HER

27 “First let the children eat all they want,” he told her, “for it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.” 28 “Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”

Jewish Rabbis would not interact with women unnecessarily. Yet Jesus has ignored this tradition. There were many women among those who followed Jesus. Jesus spent times to communicate with women and He cared for their needs, e.g. in the lives of Samaritan woman, the woman with twelve years bleeding problem, the mother-in-law of Simon Peter, Martha and Mary etc. Here Jesus occupied Himself with a pagan woman.

Jesus made a statement which was commonly known by both the Jews and the Gentiles. He started the conversations to understand the woman’s thought. He mentioned the contempt Jews have towards the Gentiles over generations, perceiving Gentiles as dogs. His intention was more than breaking down barrier between Rabbi and women, but those fortified walls between Jews and Gentiles. Through this conversation, mutual trust and friendship were established unconsciously between her and Jesus.

If we go to doctors for treatment, what do doctors expect after our cure? Definitely not our time and our friendship! Instead they will charge us for time spent and professional aids offered! If we go to temples to inquire of gods, what do those in temples require of us? Of course our offerings and money! But when we come to Jesus, He desires our personal attention, and He is after our friendship. Jesus wants to build a personal and intimate relationship with you and with me!

How would we feel if we have parents who feed us and meet all our physical needs yet refuse to relate to us? How devastating the outcome will be! Therefore God gives us family and friends for us to relate with. Above all else, He offers His friendship for us, so that through relationship with Him, we could enjoy abundant peace, joy, love and overwhelming satisfaction. He is God who speaks and relates with His people.

The more the woman conversed with Jesus, the more her faith was enhanced and strengthened. The more we relate with God, our faith will be enhanced and strengthened too. God does not intend to give us physical blessings only, but spiritual blessing through relating with Him and knowing Him personally and intimately.

Transitional sentence: The main thing God cares for is how we could relate with Him.

CONCLUSION

Illustration: Once there was a father who would call his son to him every morning and gave him pocket money of the day and chatted with him about school life. One day his son asked, “Father, why don’t you give me a whole sum of money for the month, and I will apportion it for daily usage.” The father replied, “My son, I could give you a lump sum of money for a month, even for a year. But when you get your money, I won’t be seeing you so often. My son, I will instead give you daily so that I could spend more time with you every day.”

Like the son, we do have needs in our lives. Like the son, we turn to the father and believe that he is willing to meet our needs. Yes, the father truly wants to bless the son. But on top of that, he wants to build a personal relationship with him. Jesus did that to the Phoenician woman, as how the father did to the son.

If you have a need today and would like to entrust your need unto Jesus, and believe that He will meet your need, or if you want to be know Jesus more, raise your hands and receive Him this morning. Amen. Let’s pray.

May the Lord bless you abundantly!

APPENDIX
PASSAGE: MARK 7:24-30

24Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret.

25 In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an impure spirit came and fell at his feet.

26 The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.

27 “First let the children eat all they want,” he told her, “for it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

28 “Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”

29 Then he told her, “For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter.”

30 She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.

Experiencing Fullness of God's Love

(Apr 2012: Homiletics: "Sermon Introduction")

TITLE:       EXPERIENCING FULLNESS OF GOD’S LOVE

TEXT:       1 JOHN 4:7-21

INTRODUCTION

If there ever is to have the loudest voice found in the world, it has to be the inner cry of most of the people, “Love me, please!” Yes, “Love me, please”, the cry comes right from the bottom of the hearts of the young as well as the old, the strong as well as the weak.

“Love me, please!” is something we are shy to talk about, yet love is the very basis, key and common nutrition that we need in order to nourish our souls. Since most of us will not express it through our words, we have unconsciously expressed our needs of being loved by others through our behaviors, actions, attitudes, pursues and indirect speeches.

Whether we are aware or not, the greatest need one has for life is love, the desire to be loved and the ability to love others, though it seems that many things are more urgent and practical in our lives. For example, if I were to wake up early in the morning, the first thing I desire is to enjoy my delicious breakfast. The second thing I might be concern about is how I am going to reach my office or school. My mind might be occupied by the things that need to be settled in the workplace or classroom that particular day. Seldom do I wake up in the morning and cry out immediately for someone to show me love.

Yet, we have come across many real life experiences where we realize that without love, we just simply cannot continue on with our normal daily living. Have you ever experienced or seen someone losing their love ones, either through marital breakdowns, broken relationship between boyfriend and girlfriend, loss of old-aged parents or even under-aged kids? Have you ever seen others walking with their empty eyes or leading a purposeless life abandoning themselves in the street corners? When love walks out from our lives, for either a temporary moment or a permanent period, we just could not pick up ourselves to enjoy a good meal, or to concentrate on our works or studies.

When love walks out from our life, most of us will come to a stagnant in life. Some will lock themselves up or isolate themselves, spending times to grieve over our pains. Love is silent, yet it has the power both in breaking the bones and healing the wound. Love is quiet, yet it can pain our hearts or brighten our countenances. We have lives because of love. The history can move on because there is love.

The moment we are born to this world, we have knowingly or unknowingly started our process of seeking love. When babies cry out loudly, they are not just looking for milk to feed their stomach, they are also seeking for attention, they are also signaling their needs to be touched, to be hugged, and to be attended. They smile because someone has smiled to them. They utter with their baby language because they have heard others speaking to them.

A statistic report from a research done on the new born in the hospitals shows that, those babies who receive love and care from their parents or care-takers, their mortality rate is much more lower than those babies or orphans who are born without tender care and love from their parents or relatives.

We have read news from different places of how lives of babies were preserved when they felt the tender touch, heard the whispers of their parents or siblings, urging them to be strong and to live on. Doctors have pronounced that they would not live long. Yet there were few who miraculously survived because their parents or siblings have taken effort to show their love with physical touch. All these prove that the power of love is incredible, it makes miracles and it makes impossible possible!

Since love is so important, and we need it desperately in order to live happily and satisfactorily, yet it is a sad thing to see that many just could not experience love or the fullness of love in our family, in the relationship we enter and in friends or colleagues we associate with. Marital breakdowns are found everywhere. New born babies are abandoned in naked bodies among the rubbish. Children are left in the shelter with wounds on body and in hearts. Parents are deserted in old folk houses, even on streets and become homeless. Many are betrayed by friends, by colleagues, and even by their own family members. Our deepest cry is: What has gone wrong? Where is love? Where to find love?

There are normally two characteristics we find among human love. Firstly, we try to receive love from others, who are equally in need of love from us. We have placed our hope and trust on human beings who tend to fail us. Our source of love is others, those human beings who are vulnerable and shaky. Secondly, we try to meet our needs by being loved. We love ourselves more than others. Our motivation of love is to meet our own ends. We love others hoping that they could repay us with extra love. We have made ourselves the object of love. We have made ourselves the central of love. With the unending and unrest demands of our sinful nature, our needs just could not be met and satisfied.

Proposition:

Every one of us needs love!

Interrogative sentence:

How then, shall we love? Where then, shall we find love? Whom then, shall we love?

Transitional sentence:

In order to find satisfaction and fulfillment in love, we have to know the ultimate source of love, which is God, and the object of His love, which are His people.

Honoring Our Parents

(Apr 2012: Homiletics: "Textual Sermon")

TITLE: HONORING OUR PARENTS

TEXT: EXODUS 20:12

INTRODUCTION

Illustration:

There was this video showing that a married man was frustrated over his aged mother, because the mother was unable to catch up with the advancement of the technology and thus inadequate to handle the electrical appliances in their home. His mother was slow in her motion and movement too which caused some inconveniences to the family. She was too forgetful and a frequent request for repeating questions and answers irritated the son a lot.

One day the mother peed on his expensive sofa, this made him really furious that he threatened to send his mother off to old folk house. His son overheard what the father had said, and he said he would do likewise when the father got old. The mother casually mentioned about the past how she had nursed the son who peed everywhere when he was a small boy.

The man was stunk. As he started to reflect upon his old days when he was a boy and the tender care and love that he had received from his mother, how she washed his buttock and cleansed his dirty body. He was deeply ashamed of his ungratefulness towards his mother.

Does the video sound familiar some ways to all of us? “Would you take care of me when I am old” was the question the mother asked her boy, and he happily promised that he would do so. But when the reality surfaced, he was in a dilemma and almost chose to forsake his mother.

We might see this scenario in the movies and newspaper, or heard about it through conversations with others. Or we might see how our neighbors go through this struggle. How about you and me? We too will have to face the reality of taking care of old-aged parents.

People used to say, “old man or woman is the treasure in a home”. With the economic changes, many do not feel that way. Instead they are burdened and overwhelmed by the demands of the old-aged parents. With an increase in living level of the society, everyone’s worth is seemed to be measured by our contribution in economy. If our parents could not produce for the family, they are more or less to be considered a burden rather than a blessing. Many lost their respect towards their parents because they could not see values in the lives of their parents. Yet the text found in Exodus 20:12 make it bluntly clear that we have to honor our parents.

Exodus 20:12 (NIV) Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

Proposition:           It is our very responsibility as children to honor our parents.

Interrogatives sentence:     Why should we honor our parents?

Transitional sentence:   There are two reasons we have to honor our parents.

I.            IT IS A COMMANDMENT FROM GOD

(Exodus 20:12aNIV) Honor your father and your mother,

In the days of Old Testament, Ten Commandments were given to Moses in order to maintain social justice, order and peace within the Israelite community. The first four commandments lay down men’s responsibilities towards God and the last six of the commandments demand of men’s obligations towards one another. “Honor your father and your mother” is an imperative which ranks the first priority over God’s requirement from men’s obligations towards others. There is no negotiation or discount for the statement. Before one could fulfill his civil duties towards the rest, he must first and foremost learn to honor his parents who have given birth to him and raised him up.

Ten Commandments were given so that man could live as a human before God and before others. Humanness is the very thing that God puts in us and He desires to see us demonstrating through our living and relationship with others. If a man fails to honor his parents, he violates the moral requirement from God and he is indeed inhuman.

The fifth commandment of honoring our parents applies to children of all ages, whether those we are as young as little kids, or those who have grown up as adults who are independent of our parents, or those who have entered their own old age and having parents who are dependent on us. It speaks to one year old child as well as seventy years old adult (if their parents are still alive).

Think about this statement again, “the old man or woman is the treasure in a home”. In an age which looks forwards and not backwards, children are considered to be the treasure in the family instead of old parents. Many family decisions are based on the needs of their children. Future considerations for the children are the “invisible” hands which orient the move of most families. Children dominate the decision-making of family and have unconsciously become the “little king” who rules over the household. Yet if we looked into the Bible, we see a different order in the family. The family order in the Bible starts with God, followed by the parents and then the children.

Transitional sentence:

Since honoring parents is God’s command for us, we have to simply pay them our honor for who they are and what they have done for us.

1.   WE HONOR PARENT FOR WHO THEY ARE

(Ephesians 61NIV) Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

Paul says that obeying parent is rightful thing for the children. Parents represent God and they are God’s delegated authority in family. Children adhere to their parents and they are supposed to follow the instructions of their parents. Every authority established by God on earth is meant to be revered, to be honored, to be respected and to be obeyed.

If children failed to honor their parents, they are indeed indicating their rebellion towards God, for God has instituted the family and placed their parents to be their provider, feeder, care-taker, protector, educator etc. Children learn to submit to authority when they could submit to their parents.

Parents are blessings from God. Through them we are born to this world and able to enjoy such wonderful family relationship. They have demonstrated God’s magnificent love, unlimited grace and unending mercy towards their children, and have allowed them to grow under their wings and covering. Every child needs to recognize that parenthood is God’s given role and nobody can usurp their role unless God take it away when they leave the world.

Some of the children find it hard to honor their parents because their parents have not fulfilled their parental roles in an appropriate manner. Some are abandoned since young, some are mistreated or abused by parents and some just could not feel the love from their parents. Nevertheless the fifth commandment does not lay down qualification for a parent to be honored. They are not honored because they have performed well, and they are not honored because they are rich, or because they are wise. They are honored simply for who they are, as God’s gift to their children.

The Chinese translation of the word “honor” is very unique. It comprises of two Chinese words, which is “filial” and “submit”. It has expressed vividly how we should honor our parents. When they are strong and able, we need to submit to them. When they are old and weak, we need to be filial to them. Above all else, we need to love them with sincerity.

Honor them when we are young, when we have to rely on them for everything, i.e. food, money, warmth, care, love etc. Honor them when we grow up and learn to be independent, learn to respect their views and their opinions given to us even we might think that we grow stronger and become more successful than them. Honor them when they grow old, when they are unable to provide for us, when they are unable to care even for themselves. Love them and care for their dignity.

They are precious in God’s sight not because they are capable and strong, but because of whom they are before God. They too should be precious and valuable to us, not because they contribute to other lives, but because of whom they are, someone dear to us and someone near to us. We honor them for who they are, created in the image of God and priceless treasure in our home.

Parents are given by God to be our guardians, and they have sacrificed much for us. Therefore,

2.   WE HONOR PARENTS FOR WHAT THEY DO

(Deuteronomy 6: 7NIV) Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

In the house of Israelites, parents function as more than a provider and a protector for the children. They are the leaders for their children and they are their initial teachers too. They couch their children in the way of the Lord. They have to make the teaching a life style so that they can impress their children with the living Word of God. They guide their children the way of life so that they will not deviate from the path of righteousness.

To Israelites, the parents are greatly honored when they are old. In the community of Israel, we see that elders were highly respected. They are regarded as group of people who possess wisdom and life experiences where the younger generations could draw from. Unlike our society where many of the children see their parents as outdated, marginalized in the progress of advancement.

We have to know that in every stage of our lives our parents have different function and roles to play. When we are children, we depend on them most of the times. We need them to feed us, to clothe us, to instruct us, to discern for us and to make decisions for us. We learn what is right and what is wrong from the measurement of our parents. We trust our lives unto their hands. They are the heroes and they are great in most of our eyes.

When we become adults, the parental influence might be lesser in our lives. We start to form our judgment, and we gradually are independent from them financially, mentally, emotionally and physically. Yet the Lord commands us to continue to honor our parents. Our parents still have stories to tell us. Their life experiences still serve as great references for us when we make life decisions. Learn from their marriage, learn from the ways they raise children, learn from them how to handle finance, and learn from them how to manage the household. There will sure be something we can learn from them. We can still appreciate them as leaders and teachers.

Many of us go after seminars to learn how to live a good life, how to be successful parents and how to maintain a happy marriage. If your parents are successful in these areas, learn from them and listen to their voice. They will feel greatly honored when their existence is valued and their experiences are appreciated. We shift from a mentality of total obedient as small kids to seek council of their wisdom and respect what they share with us.

The greatest tragedy of this age is the disconnection between the grown up children and their parents. The culture has shaped us to such extent that we emphasize so much on personal rights and privacy that we refuse to allow our parents to step in our lives once we are independent.

How about the time when our parents grow older and they are no more capable of providing for us, protecting us and guiding us? What if they are like the old mother mentioned in the beginning of the sermon, old and useless as many perceive she is? Children, this is the time we should honor them with our service and love. Did they hold your hands when you were young? Then learn to hold their hands when they are old. Did they wash your body when you were innocent? Then learn to clean their body if they could not do so. Did they embrace you when you are fearful? Do so if they need your hug and kisses. Take good care of them as how they took good care of us. Let them enjoy their second “infancy”.

Transitional sentence:

Guess what! When we honor our parents, God promises us His blessings.

II.          IT IS A COMMANDMENT FROM GOD WITH A BLESSING

(Exodus 20:12bNIV)….so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

Surprised? This is the only commandment out of the Ten Commandments given which a statement of blessing is imposed on us. It shows two possibilities, either this commandment is highly valued by God above all other earthly moral duties of men, or it is the hardest to observe so that an incentive is needed to encourage men to fulfill their call as children.

God gives us allowance which we are not supposed to be entitled to. Honoring parents is our earthly duty and we should carry out even without any promised blessing. Yet God graciously bestows His extra blessing.

Transitional sentence:

His blessing comes first in the form of longevity in life and second the abundant life we enjoy on the land He gives to us.

1.   WE ARE TO LIVE LONG

The promise of God sounds logic to us. When I was young, I always heard parents calling their children “yao xiu gia” (a Hokkien dialect which means “short-lived child”). This happened when the child refuses to listen to the advice and admonition from his father or mother and insisted on continuing their own ways and doings.

I used to wonder why the adults curse their children in such a way. But as I ponder upon it, I start to appreciate the scolding which does not sound nice. It is indeed not difficult to understand the meaning and warning behind the scolding. Children who are wild and rebellious are the most dangerous ones who will head into troubles and expose their lives to various risks if they refuse to take heed of the parental guidance and advices.

Many children die in their early age because they have joint the gangster groups and fought their own death. Many children die when they are young because they are drug addicts or they lead a wanton life-style. They allow their fleshy desires to control them and ultimately bring destruction upon themselves. Many of them could have live longer if they were willing to come under the authority of their parents and honor their leadership in their lives. For the parents are able to signal to them dangers and keep their steps from evils and unrighteousness.

When God promises us to live long, does it mean just a long life? There are definitely more than that.

Transitional sentence:

The long life we are to live is in the promised land of God, and so

2.   WE ARE TO ENJOY ABUNDANCE IN THE LAND

(Deuteronomy 8:6-9 NIV) Observe the commands of the Lord your God, walking in his ways and revering him. 7 for the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land – a land with streams and pools of water, with springs flowing in the valleys and hills; 8 a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig three, pomegranates, olive oil and honey, 9 a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.

Such is the descriptions of the land which the Lord promised them to live, and live for long life. It is a land that full of honey and milk. It will be a land which is abundant and fruitful. It will be a land where we shall suffer no lack and no fears. It is a blessed life to enjoy with our family members. It is a peaceful place we can share with our neighbors.

God is the Provider of all over the land He gives to us. He makes sure that the crops will be growing and the fruits will be tasty. He is in charge of the flowing of the waters and the pools of stream. He will supply all that we need as long as we live.

The Lord made it clear that as His people obey His commands and observes His ordinances, He will provide all these blessings abundantly. We have seen that when the people of God broke that commands of God, the land dried up and the crops produced no more. The history of Israel in the land of Canaan is a good lesson for us to learn and be warned. God’s promises come with an imperative. It is to honor our father and our mother and to enjoy with them the blessings God has in store for us.

Transition sentence:

The blessing is there for us to claim. We just need to trust and obey.

CONCLUSION

Obey the Word of God. Honor your father and your mother, and live in the land of the Lord and be prosperous. We are created to be blessed, to be fruitful, to enjoy meaningful and intimate relationship with the family God has placed us in. The very first relationship we enjoy in the family is the relationship with our parents. Honor them, and receive His blessings.
